Accidents involving pedestrians have the potential to be life-changing or even fatal. In contrast, those driving automobiles often walk away from accidents with slight vehicular damage and minimal or no personal injuries.

Let’s take a look at the most common pedestrian injuries litigated by our New Jersey personal injury attorneys.

Pedestrians Are More Vulnerable Than Others

Pedestrians struck by vehicles, bicyclists, and wayward objects tend to suffer significant injuries simply because they are unprotected. The average pedestrian has a layer of clothing and nothing else between him or her and external forces.

The lack of surrounding metal, seat belts, and airbags often causes pedestrians to suffer broken bones upon contact. Bone fractures and breaks are painful to the point that most such victims find it difficult to work for several months after the accident. Even a slow-moving vehicle or other force has the potential to completely shatter a bone.

Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)

Significant head trauma resulting from contact during a pedestrian injury can damage the brain. Traumatic brain injuries such as concussions have the potential to render one cognitively damaged for life.

In addition to brain damage, TBIs also cause:

  • Nausea
  • Chronic pain
  • Poor balance
  • Speech disorders

TBIs occur upon contact and also when the head and neck are whipped sideways or forward and backward. If the motion is violent enough, the victim will suffer whiplash

Internal Injuries

The force of a vehicle or other object has the potential to cause internal injuries. Such invisible injuries have the potential to damage organs, cause bleeding and even lead to death.

Aside from organ damage, internal injuries also take the form of rib fractures and bleeding in the brain. Oftentimes, it takes several hours or even days for unseen internal injuries to fully manifest.

Soft Tissue Damage

Damage to soft tissue might not seem significant at the time yet it can lead to disfiguration, scarring, and other long-term negative health outcomes.

Soft tissue damage can also be quite painful. Examples of soft tissue damage include bruises, tears, sprains, and lacerations.

Spinal Cord Injury

Damage to the spinal cord has the potential to cause complete paralysis. Significant spinal cord injury can result in death.
