Jury Awards $1.55 Million in Suicide Case

A jury in Newark awarded the widow of a Short Hills man $1.55 million in connection with her husband’s suicide.  On August 7, 2008, Betty Movitz sued Dr. Sostowski of Bernardsville and Dr. Del la Torre of Montclair who had treated her husband, Mark Movitz, for his bipolar disorder. The jury found both of these doctors negligent in his care and awarded damages to the widow and her 22 year old son who is now in college. Mr. Movitz was a renowned landscape architect who had designed many projects in New Jersey including the NJPAC and large sections of the Jersey City waterfront. Movtiz’s attorney, Bruce Nagel of Nagel Rice in Roseland, commented ”We are very pleased with the jury verdict and this will help close this tragic chapter for Mark’s loved ones”. Judge James Rothchild presided over the trial.
